I traded novels with Kaira Rouda at the Ladies of Intrigue meeting this past October.
She and I were on a panel of thriller authors together. The more I heard about her book, and her perspective, the more I thought we were kindred spirits. I was right.
If you enjoyed A Margin of Lust, I think you’ll love Kaira’s latest novel. It’s a true domestic suspense story.
The book is told from the point of view of Paul Strom, loving husband, model family man, and killer advertising executive. He’s taking his wife away for a romantic weekend in the country and is planning the Best Day Ever.
I’m not going to give any spoilers here, just suffice to say the story layers peel away like the layers of an onion. The farther in you go the more uncomfortable you’ll be. It’s written in true Alfred Hitchcock fashion with that subtle, but increasingly disturbing narrative style that ropes me in.
And, bonus, Kaira is a sweet and lovely woman. It’s always the nice ones who have the most demented imaginations!
I thoroughly enjoyed losing sleep over this one. Give it a read, and let me know what you think.
At each stop there’ll be something fun: a review, an interview, an excerpt, even the story of how I went from writing about health and wellness to writing about, well, murder. And, I’ll be popping in to answer comments or questions.
There’s also a raffle for those of you who join in the fun.
First prize is a signed copy of the book and a wine glass.
Second prize is a signed copy of the book.
See you online!

The reviews for A Margin of Lust are coming in slowly but surely, and it’s a nerve wracking process. Most of them have been very good, 4 and 5 star, and I’m grateful. I’m also learning from the comments. Here are the lessons gleaned so far:
People’s perceptions are incredibly varied.
One reviewer said the book was enjoyable, but you’d probably forget all about it as soon as you finished it. Another said the story stuck with her long after she closed the book.
One reader felt my villain wasn’t diabolical enough. Another said he was so creepy she couldn’t read the story at night.
Writing a series has its advantages.
Some reviewers felt the marriage issues between Art and Gwen, the main character and her husband, weren’t resolved as well as they could be. Life is complicated and some things take time to sort out. By book two Art has gotten some perspective on his marriage (and so have I!) and shares it with Olivia—the protagonist of that story. If you were one of those who wanted more closure, I hope The Scent of Wrath—out this December—will satisfy.
I achieved at least one of my goals.
Here’s a review from a Christian blogger and book reviewer who gives me a solid 4. I’m especially happy to get a positive review from a person of faith, because one of my goals with this novel was to write a thriller that didn’t overemphasize the crimes or contain the bad language and graphic sex so prevalent in the genre. The fact that I could write a book with “Lust” in the title and please a discerning Christian is a win for me.
People actually care.
It’s a very odd feeling to hear that people actually care about the characters who’ve been populating my head for the past three years. It’s humbling and rewarding, but mostly it’s made me realize I have a responsibility to write well, explain more completely, and make each book better than the last.
Thank you to all who’ve taken the time to review the book on Amazon or Goodreads. Your reviews are gold.
“Why?” you ask. Don’t worry my husband is safe, but one of the characters in The Scent of Wrath – book two in The Seven Deadly Sins Series, might not be so lucky.
When I need to devise a dastardly plan (mustaches twirling) I find it’s best to ask an authority on the topic. When poison is the weapon, who better to consult than a modern day medicine woman? Here’s Michelle’s response. [Read more…] about Could You Knock Off Your Husband with Essential Oils?
What’s the new giant cupcake in my life?
Have you ever looked at something someone else had, or something someone else was doing and thought, “If only…”? From a distance many things look like tasty treats topped with accolades of sugary frosting. [Read more…] about How do You Eat a Giant Cupcake?
