Did you know that men are more attracted to women who smile according to a study done by the American Psychological Association? Not any smile will work however. If your teeth are stained it’s better to keep your mouth shut, or better yet whiten. Whitening your teeth is one of the most cost effective ways of making yourself look younger. Because teeth naturally discolor as we age, whitening can take as much as ten years from your appearance.
Some other interesting things I learned were that anything that stains a white shirt can stain your teeth but if you brush your teeth after eating your pearly whites will stay that way longer. Being a red wine and coffee hound, I did a little extra research on those and found that even though wine can stain teeth it also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the gums and can help with gingivitis, so drink but swish with water after. Coffee stains more if you drink it black, so add a little cream (coconut creamer is healthy, delicious and low fat) and it will stain less. Colas and other dark sodas are the worst, they not only stain but also have a corrosive effect on your bones. Finally, two natural teeth whiteners are strawberries and the inner white lining of the rind on citrus fruit. Either can be rubbed right on your teeth to remove stains. So whiten up and smile pretty.
V.N. – Gina, I’ve heard that whitening your teeth can damage the enamel, is teeth whitening safe?
Gina – What damages enamel is abrasives. There are abrasives in many over the counter whitening kits and small amounts in whitening toothpastes. Professional systems use chemical products and are safe for your teeth.
V.N. – What is the difference between the system you use and what one would experience in a dentist’s office?
Gina – The dental systems are very effective but they take two to three hours. My whitening procedure is done in 10 to 20 minutes. Also, the products that dentist’s use to whiten teeth have a high incidence of causing sensitivity. The products I use are more natural and less inflammatory to the teeth and gums. There is a pretty broad cost difference as well. Dentist’s charge anywhere from $300 to $600 dollars.
V.N. – How about whitening trays that someone might get from their dentist, how do they compare to your system?
Gina – Again, whitening trays are effective but they are more time consuming, an hour or more daily for a week is usually what is recommended to start the process; and there is still the sensitivity factor.
V.N. – Once a person’s teeth are white how can they keep them that way?
Gina – I offer a touch up pen that can be used once a week for 5 minutes. It’s very reasonable and a great way to maintain your smile no matter what system you use to whiten your teeth.
